COD Culinary Students Create Gingerbread Houses for La Grange Business Association’s ‘Hometown Holiday’ Campaign
By Angela Mennecke
Custom gingerbread houses created by College of DuPage Culinary Arts students will be on display from Dec. 7 to 21 at small businesses in downtown La Grange as part of the La Grange Business Association’s six-week ‘Hometown Holiday’ to encourage residents and visitors to shop local and celebrate with activities that bring people together.
Sponsored by Kathy Dierkes State Farm Insurance, the gingerbread house tour includes online voting for the People's Choice Award. After the contest, the gingerbread houses will be donated to Helping Hand Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults with disabilities. The donated houses will be used to decorate Helping Hand Center group homes throughout the Chicago area.
Culinary Arts instructor Donna Wagner said her cake decorating class worked on gingerbread houses during many fall semesters over the last seven years. Knowing the houses will be donated to a cause near to her heart makes this year so special, she said.
“While previous gingerbread houses went to a variety of children’s functions, COD’s Community Relations Specialist Joan DiPiero helped us to become involved with Helping Hand Center,” Wagner said. “From the time I first started teaching, I have encouraged my students to give back their talents. All children-related causes have been my first love. It’s a way to pay back for healthy children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of my own. I always encourage my students to share their talent with the next generation.”
