Swati Chopra
Major: Graphic Design

As a child, Swati Chopra was always scribbling and doodling.

“In school, my art teacher fostered this enthusiasm and I progressed to sketching and painting,” she said. “My favorite medium is acrylics, and I love to paint both abstracts and nude portraits. By age 24, I had already participated in gallery shows and art and fashion events in India and Germany, which further fueled my enthusiasm and convinced me to pursue this passion as a professional endeavor.”

When Chopra enrolled at College of DuPage, she was formally introduced to graphic design. Its mixture of subtlety, complexity and expressiveness instantly captivated her.

“The challenge of design to communicate through visual elements was highly inspiring to me and enriched my understanding of the social role of the artist,” she said. “I already had a strong appreciation for and ability with color and form, and had a keen observation – qualities essential to an excellent designer. I learned how design can be a problem-solving process and the pragmatic design approach taught at COD shaped and enhanced my native ability as a designer and harnessed my full potential as a graphic designer.”

As a result, Chopra created a “vibrant and dazzling” design portfolio, which gave her the confidence to apply to the top graphic design programs in the country. She was accepted at the Rhode Island School of Design, Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, School of Visual Arts in New York, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Columbia College in Chicago and Harrington College of Design. She selected RISD and earned her BFA with honors.

Her goal is to obtain her Masters of Fine Arts degree in graphic design while gaining experience at a reputable design firm. Eventually she would like to teach at a college or university.

Chopra credits College of DuPage for having a vitalizing effect on her career prospects, giving her professional design skills, and helping her mature as a human being.

“On my first day at COD, I wasn’t even aware of all the design softwares, but under the guidance of my dedicated professors, by the end of two years I finished the program with honors and also won the gold award on Portfolio Night,” she said. “I would like to thank Professors John Callegari, Brian Blevins, David Chu, Jean Ruth and all my other professors. Thank for being patient with me and helping me reach my goals. I owe it all to you.

“To anyone considering the Graphic Design program at COD, you will get the best education on par or even better than some of the four-year degree colleges and at a fraction of the cost. You will graduate with your design fundamentals clear and design skills enhanced enough to get a job, or to study further –- whatever your goals might be. The dedicated faculty members help you from stage one to reach your maximum potential. Plus you will make friends for life.”
