Student Spotlight: Teso Coker
Major: Associate in Science
Teso Coker’s father wanted a better life for his children than what he had.
“My father and mother came to the U.S. before they met,” she said. “When it came time for college, my father was always telling me about the incredible possibilities that College of DuPage had to offer.”
In addition to pursuing her associate’s degree, Coker was a member of the COD tennis team and plays #1 singles. She won the regional meet in 2015 and advanced to the nationals in 2016.
Coker graduated with honors with her Associate in Science degree and has transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she is majoring in conservation and environmental science. She is also trying out for the tennis team.
Between academics and athletics, Coker discovered at College of DuPage a school that provided her with what she needs.
“I want to become an environmental scientist, and COD laid down the guideline for my first degree,” she said. “I also wanted to continue playing tennis when I leave COD, so I learned a lot of time management. I also realized that there are many people at COD who are passionate about their profession. Generally, they have been in their field for a long time. Their experiences gave insight into my future as I plan my own short- and long-term goals.
“For students who are considering COD, I would say go for it. As you are figuring out what you want to accomplish, or if you already know what you want to accomplish, COD is a smart investment of your time. There are always degrees, programs and other things that COD has to offer that will allow you to become a more valuable individual.
“COD gave me a more personal education, and I feel prepared to take on these next couple of years at a four-year institution.”
