Student Spotlight: Greg Gauthier
Major: Math Classes/Transfer
Greg Gauthier’s time at College of DuPage was different from most students.
He challenged himself by taking a variety of math classes while still in middle and high schools. In sixth grade, he took a high school-level geometry class through the Talent Search program and then enrolled in advanced classes during his sophomore, junior and senior years of high school.
“I took advanced classes like multivariable calculus, linear algebra and differential equations since I had exhausted the math classes my high school had to offer,” he said. “Taking those classes at night allowed me to continue to be challenged in math without causing severe disruptions in my regular high school schedule.”
Instead of pursuing a degree or certificate at COD, Gauthier had the math knowledge and proficiency to attend Vanderbilt University, where he was an advanced student majoring in math and economics with a minor in Spanish, earning his bachelor's degree in 2013. He transferred his Differential Equations class credits from COD to Vanderbilt, and his goal is to become a math professor.
“My experiences with explaining math concepts and solutions to problems in an understandable way have inspired me to consider teaching at the university level as a career,” he said.
Gauthier entered the graduate program at Princeton and earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics. After his third year, he participated in a one-year program of research at the University of Rome Sapienza on a team headed by Paul Wollan. He also received the Princeton math department’s Graduate Student Teaching Award.
Currently, Gauthier is working part-time as a lecturer in the Princeton University Math Department and part-time as a programmer at a startup called Scratchwork. He’s thankful to College of DuPage for its role in his math development.
“I am very grateful for the opportunity to take advanced classes with such great professors as Bob Cappetta and James Africh,” he said. “COD gave me the opportunity to challenge myself and learn more while still a full-time high school student. This enabled me to ‘hit the ground running’ in my full-time studies at Vanderbilt without having to forgo the high school experience which aided in my personal development.”
