Student Spotlight: Meenakshi Singh
Major: Computer Information
Earning a professional degree in the U.S. is a dream come true for Meenakshi Singh.
Having earned a certificate in computer programming in India, she wanted to pursue a degree in the same field. And her research brought her to College of DuPage.
“Once I got the opportunity to come to the U.S. with my husband, the first thing in my mind was to complete my professional degree as soon as I can,” she said. “I realized that COD has a huge facility and is very professional. And, being an international student, the tuition fees for my program were another factor to choose COD.”
Singh contacted Kathy Smid, Coordinator of International Student Services, and discovered a strong support system for international students like herself.
“With Kathy’s excellent knowledge and guidance, I completed the process of my registration, a highly favorable process for an international student with an educational visa status. I was so happy when I finally became eligible to get my program at COD, and I was so excited on the first day of attending my class. I found that every professor took an interest in each student and properly guided them through their problems.”
Singh also obtained a job as a periodical assistant in the Library, where she gained more confidence. Having completed her work at COD, she is finishing her bachelor’s degree in computer programming through the College’s 3+1 program with Lewis University. She then would like to pursue a master’s degree in programming. Singh is currently an IT intern at Republic Bank of Chicago.
She is truly thankful to College of DuPage for providing the opportunity that will make her dream a reality.
“Being a married woman with a child, the chance I got over here makes me proud as I finish my higher studies and become competitive for the workforce,” she said. “It’s not easy to start a career from a scratch, but this is happening to me with a lot of support from my husband, family members and friends. I feel lucky that I came to COD and got the right direction in my career. I wish and hope that COD will keep encouraging students from all over the world on the basis of the quality education it offers.”
