Esnelia Vargas
Major: Speech Language

Pathology Assistant

Esnelia Vargas has worked for many years as an interpreter for early intervention with speech language pathologists, building a bridge between therapists and Hispanic children and their families.

However, over time Vargas realized she wanted to be the therapist working with clients.

“I knew I needed to go back to school and become a bilingual therapist,” she said. “College of DuPage is one of the only area colleges with an accredited Speech Language Pathology Assistant program and the reputation amongst professionals in the Early Intervention field was excellent. The program is set up to meet the needs of the state licensure and the College has great resources that helped me be successful as I finished my degree. Being placed in a clinical setting that is hiring has met all goals educational and personal.”

As a working wife and mother of three boys, Vargas faced many challenges attending classes, including being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2013 and inflammatory arthritis in 2015. Still, she wanted to finish her degree, and in 2016 was named an Outstanding Graduate finalist at COD.

Now with her associate’s degree, Vargas is continuing her education. She currently works as an SLPA for early intervention while studying in the Communications Sciences and Disorders program at St. Xavier University, where she earned the PTK scholarship. She also took her GRE and will apply to graduate programs in order to obtain a master’s degree in Communication Disorders and become a supervising speech language pathologist.

Vargas is happy with what she received at College of DuPage and encourages others to attend.

“Take advantage of all the resources on campus, they are free and will only help you,” she said. “It’s never too late to go back to school and follow your dream. If there’s a will, there’s a way.”
